Jan Kala Sahitya Manch Sanstha (JKSMS), The Mother NGO

Background :
JKSMS is a Non-Governmental and Secular social organization. The organization founded in 1983 by young social activists of Jaipur in India. It became a formal organization through legal status with its registration on November 9, 1983 under Rajasthan Societies Registration Act 1958. JKSMS is also registered under the Foreign Contribution (Regulating) Act, 1976 (FCRA).
The organization is widely active in Rajasthan state of India. Its network of activities pertains to Children’s Rights, Education, Health, women's empowerment, prevention of HIV/AIDS, To stop Migration and Trafficking with social mobilization through theatre on several social issues. JKSMS is conducting ten centres and one short term shelter home for runaway children under the project of 'Integrated programme for street children'.
Thirty five Community schools for slum children in Jaipur city also being conduct by JKSMS. A full time residential facility for homeless children (Apna Ghar) is also providing by JKSMS in Jaipur city. However it is in a rented house due to lack of funds. JKSMS owned land in a village near to Jaipur city and wants to built a permanent Building of Apna-Ghar for 125 children To provide residential facilities. This is the main goal for the current year.

The Organization is also working in other parts of Rajasthan state for prevention of HIV/ AIDS , Adolescent girls' development, Rural Development, Natural Resource Management and Art & Culture.

Awards/Honors got by JKSMS
· Raja Dulha Rai Award for outstanding contribution towards upliftment of the poor and undeveloped areas of Jaipur given by Maharaja Sawai Man Singh-II Museum Trust, The City Palace 06 October, 2003
· Rotary Award during 2004
· Jal Mitra Award at Phagi block level for Rain Water conservation in Phagi block during 2006
· Jal Mitra Award at Jaipur district level for Rain Water conservation in Phagi block during 2006
· Lupin Award fat state level for rural development


Philosophy-Approach & Strategy:
JKSMS believe in the principles of democracy and children's participation at all level of planning- implementation and monitoring. So the organization is working with active participation of communities and its target groups. These focus groups are actively involved with the organization’s development activities.
The core of our concern is the child. We are giving special preference to street children, who are destitute, unprivileged, homeless and struggling for survival on the streets without family ties.

Main Priorities of JKSMS :
The Organization is active for children with following priorities based on its objectives :
Social mobilization for child rights.
To provide homely environment to homeless children.
Primary & quality education to Vulnerable groups of children.
Development-Protection and Rehabilitation of street children, especially for those who are living in very difficult circumstances without home and family ties.
Elimination of child labour.
Empowerment of adolescent girls belonging to deprived classes.

Credibility and relationship with Govt./ International Agencies/ NGOs:
The organization is implementing its projects and activities with the collaboration and cooperation of Govt. of India, Govt. of Rajasthan, different International Agencies and other NGOs. JKSMS is linking up with Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, Govt. of India, Social Welfare Department, Govt. of Rajasthan, Child line India foundation, UNICEF, UNFPA, ICHAP and state level network of NGOs working for street children. JKSMS is maintaining its linkages with the Royal Family of Jaipur, and getting support regularly for the activities pertains to children.
The organization is also a member of city Advisory Committee of Child line project which is a network of allied system for the protection and health of children. JKSMS is also an active member of networks with Catholic Relief Services, Butterflies, New Delhi and Save the Children India.

Background of Apna-Ghar :
Apna-Ghar is Shelter Home for children struggling for survival on streets without home and family ties. It was established during October, 1994 by its mother NGO Jan Kala Sahitya Manch Sanstha (JKSMS). This is governing under ‘Integrated Programme for Street children’ project. The budget for Apna-Ghar under the project is not sufficient to meet out all main and supporting activities for resident children. Following are the target groups of Apna-Ghar :
· Run away children
· Street children (Children of the streets)
· Missing children
· Orphans
· Children effected by natural calamities
Above groups of age between 5 to 18 years can stay here to avail the facilities of Apna-Ghar. Apna Ghar is in a rented house since its establishment.. On an average of 25 to 30 children are availing the round-the-clock shelter facilities in Apna Ghar.


Objective of Apna-Ghar :
Development-Protection- Rehabilitation of homeless children.
Facilities providing in present Apna-Ghar :
The resident children of Apna Ghar availing following indoor and outdoor facilities:
· Boarding with all basic facilities like food/clothes/utensils/bed/recreational and sports material/learning & teaching material/other utility items etc.
· Non-formal primary education by NGO's teacher.
· Formal primary education through enrolment in Govt./Public schools.
· Homework support to school going children.
· Indoor & Outdoor Recreational and sports opportunities.
· Life skill education with practical Knowledge of routine activities.
· Awareness regarding Health/personal hygiene/sanitation.
· Vocational training.
· Medical support with regular health check ups and immunization.
· Exposure tours/Educational tours.
· Counselling with their parents for re-integration to their families.
· Regular follow up after Re-Integration in to their families.
· To develop general knowledge through books and interaction with visitors.
· Celebration of birthdays and festivals.
· To develop discipline for better and systematic living.
· Rehabilitation of children through income generation opportunities to those who completed age of 18 years.







Functioning of Apna-Ghar :
Apna-Ghar is functioning well through full time workers of the organization. The NGO is maintaining involvement of local community/Volunteers to get additional support. Some of them regularly participation in activities and functioning of Apna-Ghar. They are contributing their time for these children and providing packages of little support like: food, sweets. Fruits, money and clothes on several occasions.
Staff of shelter home is responsible for routine functioning and activities with care of resident children. JKSMS is trying to form a "Voluntary Guardians" for Apna Ghar among local contributors. The team of these local guardians will coordinate with staff and will be responsible for better achievements. Local Guardians and management of JKSMS will look
after the outcome of children. The management is facing lot of problems due to lack of funds. But, the NGO is trying best at its own level to get maximum out put through minimum in put.
